| About The Magik*Magik Orchestra |
The Magik*Magik Orchestra is founded by artistic director Minna Choi. Its mission is to simplify the collaborative process between independent rock musicians and classical artists, both in the studio and on tour, by bringing together instrumentalists, composers and producers with a genuine understanding of both aesthetics. The Magik*Magik Orchestra is the official studio orchestra of Tiny Telephone founded in 1997 by local hero and Barsuk Records artist, John Vanderslice.
The Magik*Magik Orchestra debuted on August 21st as part of Ronen Givony's Wordless Music Series, at Herbst Theatre, to a sold out crowd of over 900 young concert-goers. Three of the five featured composers were in attendance at the show including Fred Frith, Mason Bates and Jonny Greenwood. Other fun locals who were also in attendance included MTT (conductor of the San Francisco Symphony), Mike Patton, Zeena Parkins, Alessandro Moruzzi, William Winant & Joan Jeanrenaud (who performed), Matthias Bossi, John Vanderslice and more. Rave reviews of the show have been received from Joshua Kosman of the SF Chronicle, Janos Gereben of SF Classical Voice, Richard Scheinin of the San Jose Mercury News, The Opera Tattler and more.
On November 14th, The Magik*Magik Orchestra followed up their debut with a special evening at The Swedish American Hall with folk-pop trio, 2 Foot Yard, featuring musicians Carla Kihlstedt, Shahzad Ismaily and Marika Hughes. The sold-out performance opened with works by Charles Ives, Arvo Part, Lisa Bielawa and Morton Feldman and closed with a set of 2FY songs joined by 16 piece string orchestra, 1 clarinet and 6 piece womens mini-choir from the Magik*Magik Orchestra as well as guest musicians Freddi Price and Ben Goldberg.
For their final performance of 2008, The Magik*Magik morphed into mini-sized soloists/duet-ists in a joint performance with FatCat Records artists' Tom Brosseau and Hauschka at Hotel Utah. The sold out performance opened with new music pieces by Terry Riley, Ross Edwards and Gloria Justen and closed with 2 cellists, 2 violinists and 2 oboists backing up Dusseldorf prepared pianist, Hauschka, during his set. As an added bonus, the packed audience was treated to a surprise solo and indie performance by violin virtuoso, Hilary Hahn, who stopped by to play with Tom Brosseau while in town to perform Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the SF Symphony.
